Nurturing Female Executives To Improve Staff Retention

Project Background

South Yorkshire Police covers the county's three boroughs and the City of Sheffield, with a total population of 1.2 million.

The force is being divided into four basic command units (BCUs): Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.


Specific Challenges

Conscious of the very few female officers or staff in senior positions, the Force used exit interviews to better understand reasons for leaving, reasons for not applying for promotion boards and reasons women believed they were unsuccessful at promotion boards.

As a result, South Yorkshire Police wanted to find ways to encourage and empower women to achieve their own career goals.

Improved retention of female officers and staff and increased numbers of females applying for, and achieving success at, promotion boards.

Solution

Maxlowe Solution

A one day conference, bringing together 100-150 female officers to discuss their fears and aspirations, support ambition and instill confidence.

Outcome

Outcome

Each delegate left with a greater sense of belonging and renewed enthusiasm for her career within the force.
