There is no time like the present

17th August 2011

Are you thinking of developing yourself? Either for promotion or personally for growth?

Is it something you always put off until tomorrow? You think you are not good enough or there is always tomorrow?

In a recent publication (March 2008) Insights (a publication linking gender and organisational effectiveness) carried out a survey called “paths to leadership: Women’s experiences with and aspirations for board service”

Women, who currently comprise 51% of the U.S. managerial workforce but only 14.8% of the directors on boards of large, publicly traded U.S. corporations.

We asked what actions these women believed they needed to take to secure a formal board position. Their three top priori-ties were social network building (88%), self-promotion (61%), and career progression (56%). Respondents clearly recognized the importance of both “what you know” and “who you know” but felt they were not ready or capable to take the step. There is now a willingness to move women forward…….so….. Smell the coffee ladies, there is no time like the present.  Spring is in the air and new challenges await.

But, I hear you say……you want some help, some confidence to take that step.

A quick model for you to try is the grow model, developed for coaching.

G     Goal. Set yourself a goal.  what is it you want to achieve?

R     Reality. having set the goal have a reality check. Where are you now?

O     Options.  what are your options for achieving your goal? Brainstorm.

W    Wrap up.  At the end of this, list specific tasks, people who can support you, how do you measure success and what could stop you being successful?

Keep revisiting the model and keep a journal of your progress….You will be surprised by how far you can move in a short time.

A lot of my work is around inspiring women to be the best they can be.  If you want more information, give me a call or drop me an e-mail…. take that step.
